Using nurbs curves and extruding on them and then tweeking their points to flow along the edge of the dome i have come up with this so far:
Its pretty tedious but its a start. The idea of it is for it to resemble a brain which is why the pipes are at random angles. Its supposed to look old/worn too so the pipes may sag a bit over a period of time.
This image is just to get a rough idea of what i will be working towards. Imagine it a lot more full but not so much that light can not get through.
